Celebrate Christmas at the Bluecoat

With so much to arrange and plan, the run up to Christmas can sometimes feel stressful. However, at Bluecoat we offer a host of free exhibitions, family activities, events, food and drink  that you can enjoy right in the heart of Liverpool city centre, making the festive season that little bit easier. Read on for our round-up of how you can celebrate your Christmas with Bluecoat – we hope you can join us.

Play a tune on the Illumaphonium

Liverpool city centre has been transformed into a Christmas spectacle with the Snowflake Trail taking over the city until Tue 3 Jan. One of the highlights of this festive takeover is the Illumaphonium, a three and a half metre tall dynamic interactive music-making sculpture by artist and inventor Michael Davie. Consisting of over 200 illuminating chime bars, it is possible to play anything you can imagine, from a clumsy version of Jingle Bells to a note perfect rendition of The Snowman – come down and give it a go!

Find that unique gift at our Big Christmas Shopping Weekend

Join us on Friday 16 & Saturday 17 Dec for our Big Christmas Shopping Weekend. Whether you’re looking for the perfect stocking filler or a vintage treasure, Bluecoat is home to a whole host of independent retailers offering gifts with a difference. You can shop for everything from contemporary ceramics, one-off jewellery pieces and Himalayan textiles to specialist second hand books and handmade footwear. Our regular record and book fairs will be in the building, making Christmas shopping easy.

Don’t worry, if you are all shopped out by this point we will be helping you get into the Christmas spirit with live music, festive food and drink offers, and free family friendly craft activities between 1 and 4pm on the Saturday.

Christmas Dinner at Bluecoat

With its high ceilings, beautiful sash windows and traditional oak floors, Bluecoat’s upstairs Bistro offers a striking setting for your Christmas lunch. Book now to enjoy a two course meal with all the trimmings, made with the finest local produce. Your meal includes a free glass of Prosecco, all for just £14.95.

Visit a free Exhibition

Bluecoat is Liverpool’s centre for contemporary arts and we support and exhibit a wide variety of both up-and-coming and established artists. Explore our three winter exhibitions, displaying work from a diverse selection of artists. There’s Keith Piper’s Unearthing the Banker’s Bones, a science fiction inspired exhibition set in an apocalyptic future. Or why not visit Adham Faramawy’s Janus Collapse (the juice-box edition), an immersive video installation which explores the impact advertising has on us, something that feels especially relevant considering the constant advertising bombardment we experience at this time of year. Also on display is Auto Agents, an exhibition of works by artists from The Royal Standard studios in Liverpool, curated by the AaA collective, a group of five people with learning disabilities. And because our exhibitions are all free, a visit during the most expensive time of year won’t break the bank!
