Father's Day ideas from Bluecoat

Falling on the third Sunday in June, Father's Day is just around the corner. The occasion celebrates the impact fathers and father figures have on the lives of their children. Although celebrated on different dates worldwide, it's an internationally recognised event, which began in the US over 100 years ago.

Is your dad tough to buy for? Then read on as we offer inspiration through our independent retail offer.

Probe Records

If your dad is partial to a rare vinyl or recent release, then Probe is a must stop. The shop has become an institution in the city, having been the centre of Liverpool music for almost forty years. A true Liverpool original, Probe opened their doors for business in 1971, nurturing the early careers of some of the region’s best known musical talent, including Pete Wylie, The Teardrop Explodes’ Julian Cope and Dead or Alive’s front-man Pete Burns.

Probe specialise in selling new and reissue vinyl and also have an extensive and varied selection of shiny compact discs covering everything from the 1960s (or earlier) to the latest sounds of today (or even tomorrow), so please stop by and see what interesting music you can find.

Kernaghan Books

From vintage football programmes to rare penguin editions, Bryan and Alwyn Kernaghan are on hand to provide that individual literary gift this Father’s Day. Specialising in a variety of rare books, the shop also stocks Victorian and Edwardian prints, pamphlets, photographs, maps and more.

Residing on Merseyside for over 30 years the shop are conscious that fashions and tastes change, embracing both the 'vintage' as well as 'antiquarian' in their well presented and changing offer of books from over 400 years of publishing.

R&J Porter

Bob Porter is a world-class master-silversmith and engraver, as well as long-term occupant of the Bluecoat. In the trade for forty years and owning their own business for twenty, Bob and his wife Joan, undertake all sorts of silver-smithery including conserving and repairing trophies including famous sporting cups.

Bob is on hand each year at Aintree’s Grand National to engrave all of the trophies from the winning line. He also designs his own jewellery and product range which you can see displayed when you visit their shop. If you would like to commission a new piece, or have something engraved, then don’t hesitate to pay them a visit this Father’s Day.

J.H. Benson & Co

Bluecoat’s resident cobblers J.H. Benson & Co have been producing finest men’s footwear since 1915. In Raymond Chandler's The Big Sleep, Vivian Sternwood wears a mannish tweed suit, shirt and tie, and ‘hand-carved walking shoes' a description which perfectly fits the highly-polished and carefully crafted shoes on offer in Benson’s. A true meeting of clothing and culture perfect for your dad this Father's Day.

Finish your shopping trip with a special Father's Day treat? Visit our sci-fi themed visual art in the form of Larissa Sansour's current exhibition and you have a winning day out.
