Bed-In at the Bluecoat: Florence Court - Living Books

Currently there we are still in touch with a generation which lived through the single most disruptive conflict of the 20th century. For many the war provided a backdrop for their formative years shading their ambitions for a peaceful world. Since then we have had generations whose experience of war has been at a distance mediated through the media.

How do you explain to such a generation what’s it was like to live through such a time. That is what the gang from Florence Court have decided to become ‘Living Books’ for the day and recount their experience of life during wartime.

This is not a sombre or dour occasion, but rather a display of the human spirit. The Living Books recount that who under duress, how a thing like hiding under the bed out of fear of dropping bombs can soon become a game, a threat subdued through the joy of play.

What becomes apparent throughout the day, and especially towards the end as some of members get up and dance, is that the Living Books are willing to engage and pass on their knowledge and experience, and teach new generations not though their mistakes but through their ability to live life.
