Bluecoat welcomes 40,000th visitor to anniversary exhibition

This week Bluecoat will welcome the 40,000th visitor through the doors of its 300 year anniversary exhibition, In the Peaceful Dome.

To celebrate, the 40,000th visitor will receive a Blue Room artist's print and complimentary meal in the Upstairs Bistro, echoing the event which took place in 1931 when Genesis was first displayed at Bluecoat

In 1931, Jacob Epstein's controversial sculpture Genesis was exhibited at Bluecoat. This marble carving of a pregnant woman attracted over 49,000 visitors who each paid sixpence to see it, generating over £1,000 for the arts centre's building fund.

After 86 years, the sculpture recently returned to Bluecoat for its exhibition In the Peaceful Dome, where it is being displayed in the gallery, looking out through the windows onto busy College Lane.

The exhibition is proving popular and, echoing the presentation of a print to Miss D. Porter, the  25,000th visitor to the 1931 exhibition, Bluecoat will present its 40,000th visitor with an artist's print.

That attendance figure is expected to be reached this week, and the exhibition continues til 8 April.
