Articulating Women Residency Selection: Chinar Shah

Bluecoat is pleased to announce the appointment of Chinar Shah as Artist in Residence; she will work with us as part of an International Networking Project on Articulating Women, a multi-organisation and multi-disciplinary partnership between Liverpool Hope University, FACT and Bluecoat in Liverpool (UK) and Christ University in Bengaluru (India). This network is funded by the AHRC. The project aims to explore issues of women’s experience of gender in relation to complex social and cultural contexts.

Shah will join Bluecoat for an initial two-week period in October 2018, followed by a 3 month residency in April 2019. During her residency, she will continue her research into the Indian government’s ‘Digital India’ campaign, an initiative to bring more government services online and connect rural India to high-speed internet. Of particular interest to Shah are the ways in which government policies unfairly affect women. Her research will examine the sudden demonetisation of banknotes in 2016 and the impact this had on women. Shah will work towards new digital and performance works in relation to this research.

Chinar Shah is an artist, writer, academic and occasional curator. Her work has been shown internationally in exhibitions at Galleri Box in Gothenburg, Tate Liverpool and Kochi Biennial collateral. Shah has also been part of many international artist exchange programmes. She recently received grants from the prestigeous Inlaks Shivdasani Foundation and Pronto - Göteborg Stad Kultur of the city of Gothenburg. She runs a domestic gallery called ‘Home Sweet Home’ in Bangalore, India. In 2018 Shah co-edited the publication Photography in India: From Archives to Contemporary Practice published by Bloomsbury, UK. She studied Literature and Cultural Studies at English and Foreign Languages University, Hyderabad and later did her PGDP in Photography from the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad. She currently teaches photography and visual arts at Srishti Institute of Art, Design and Technology, Bangalore.
