Creative Community member R&J Porter have an important job to do at The Grand National

With The Grand National taking place this weekend, a member of our Creative Community is preparing for a very important job.

Bob & Joan Porter are the husband and wife team behind R&J Porter, engraver, jeweller and silversmith. Bob has been in the trade for over forty years, and for the last eleven he has been engraving the trophies for The Grand National at Aintree Racecourse.

Their first involvement was for The Grand National’s 150th Anniversary for which they designed a special medal for the jockeys riding that year. These medals have become somewhat of a sought after treasure, even featuring on an episode of Antique Roadshow.

For ten of the eleven years that they’ve been involved in the Grand National, they have engraved the trophies live in front of the general public in a marquee with soldiers on guard. This high profile event has made its way across the globe as a customer of theirs saw Bob and his famous engravings in a Canada newspaper.

After so many years, Bob and Joan continue to be proud and grateful to be part of such a momentous occasion. They say “We feel very honored to be involved, it’s a lot of teamwork with the staff at the course and the Jockey Club but we get to meet a lot of really nice, interesting people from all over the world.”

R&J Porter has been a staple of our Creative Community within our front courtyard of onsite retailers for over 25 years.
