Film Premiere: Expanding the Picture

Expanding the Picture was a nine-month programme supporting the development of emerging dance artists Tony Carroll and Diana Disley, both members of Blue Room, Bluecoat’s inclusive arts programme.

Carroll and Disley have been Blue Room members since 2008, through which they have explored a range of mainly visual arts practices and collaborated extensively. They started working closely with dance artist Mary Prestidge in 2016, initially in a group setting before this latest phase of more focused activity was made possible with support from Esmee Fairbairn Foundation and Arts Council England.

Prestidge has been one of the key figures in the development of improvised dance practice in the UK since the 1970s. Now a member of Liverpool Improvisation Collective, based at Bluecoat, Prestidge was keen to bring a new authenticity to inclusive dance practices. The approach would aim to facilitate a process whereby Carroll and Disley could find their own unique performance voice, building on their significant capacity for improvisation.

Guest artists were invited to provide specific skills development for Carroll and Disley, including Vogue artist Darren Suarez, vocal improvisor Steve Boyland and multi-disciplinary performance artist Mary Pearson.

Inspired by these interactions, Carroll, Disley and Prestidge crafted a 30 minute performance piece which was shared at Bluecoat in February 2019, also featuring musician and composer Ged Barry.

This short film, made with Soup Co, captures the essence of the collaboration, the journey and the magic of the performance itself.

To help Bluecoat continue to provide specialist support to artists who are coming to their practice through non-traditional routes.
