Bluecoat Chief Executive Mary Cloake on our new season.

Our new season of events and exhibitions is now online! Mary Cloake talks us through her highlights...

This season we celebrate our work helping artists develop their ideas, with a focus on two who have been in residence in our studios, Jonathan Baldock and Frances Disley. Both have developed new work and we are delighted to present this in public through two new exhibitions: Jonathan’s Facecrime, a surreal landscape of animated ceramics, and Frances’ Star Trek-inspired Pattern Buffer that takes us into a verdant world of restorative rest and activity.

Bluecoat has been a home for artists since 1907, developing the talent of many creative practitioners and cultural workers since then and making the arts centre a place to experiment and cross boundaries between art forms and different artistic practices. We are therefore pleased to present, in addition to our exhibitions, work by acclaimed choreographer Miranda Tufnell, alongside work in progress from Merseyside Dance Initiative’s scratch night.

Our ongoing heritage displays and online archive mybluecoat.org.uk reveal a history of artists developing new ideas and presenting their work through decades of artistic exuberance. Many artists who showed at Bluecoat early in their career have gone on to bigger things, and we were delighted that two of our alumni, Sonia Boyce and Zineb Sedira were recently selected to represent their respective countries, Britain and France, at the 2021 Venice Biennale.

Bluecoat is equally committed to creating opportunities for audiences to get involved with the work of artists. Accompanying our new exhibitions is a range of hands-on workshops and other events in which to experience making ceramics, yoga, kung fu, and a meditative sound experience - providing insight into the artists’ work and a chance to discover what is involved in making exhibitions. We encourage audiences of all ages to embrace creativity, and our Printmaking Studios offer an opportunity to develop creative skills, with both introductory classes and more advanced courses. Our family events reflect the scope of artistic work in our building, with workshops and events on nature, sculpture and storytelling just some of the activities designed specifically for families at Bluecoat this season.

We hope you enjoy your visit.
