Profile - A la mode owner Susannah O'Driscoll

Susannah is the owner of A la mode, a fashion house based at the Bluecoat. A la mode specialises in sustainable fashion, minimising the effects on the environment through recycling fabrics and using locally sourced resources, to create unique bespoke pieces.

What is your creative practice?
Fashion design

How did you get into your profession?
I started a shop eight years ago and have been making clothes since 2001.

What is a typical working day like for you?
I start at around 9am most days and carry on until about 10pm - constantly making things. It is definitely a continuous development for me.

Why do you like being based at the Bluecoat?
It is the centre of creativity in Liverpool and the old building links into my recycling theme which is incorporated into the clothes I make.

What do you enjoy most about your role at the Bluecoat?
I enjoy making and creating the clothes as that is my passion.

How do you feel when you are in the creative process?
I feel at my happiest, (without sounding too cheesy!) and relaxed. If I’m not doing anything, I feel stressed.

What is your overall creative goal?
To build a brand and work with designers and keep a following going by building this up. I have something in the pipeline with a major retailer, which will be positive for the brand.

Are you inspired by anything or anyone?
Everything inspires me! Especially the recyclable and environmentally friendly things. I had a budget to fit the shop and used things such as lamp shades and even an old door for the changing room to create the look.

What achievement are you most proud of?
Setting up at the Bluecoat.

What advice would you give anyone starting out in your field?
Test things beforehand, do your research and build up your contacts.
