By Betty Ritchie.
The Bluecoat is seeking creative young people aged 16 – 25 years old with a genuine interest in learning new craft skills including lace making, embroidery, quilting, weaving, printing and book- making for the Hand on Craft programme taking place on Wednesday afternoons October 2012 through to February 2013.
Hand on Crafts is a national inter-generational programme. It aims to involve young people in learning traditional crafts from skilled volunteers and working alongside contemporary practitioners to create new work for an exhibition at the Bluecoat.
The aims of Hand on Crafts are :
- To improve interest and involvement in traditional crafts amongst 30 young people and older volunteer practitioners.
- To create work for an exhibition at the end of the project.
- Create an opportunity for skill sharing, where the volunteer practitioners also learn new media and social networking skills from the young people.
The project will commence on the 31st October for an initial six week programme offering two taster sessions in the following crafts:
31st Oct and 7th Nov Lace making and Embroidery
14th Nov and 21st Nov Quilting and weaving
28th Nov and 5th Dec Printing and Book Making
After the first six weeks, participants will be asked to choose which craft they would like to specialise in for the second half of the project. Three will then be selected for six week’s worth of workshops, running from 16th January – 20th February 2013. An Exhibition of the work will be shown at the Bluecoat in March 2013.
This is an excellent opportunity for young people with a keen interest in craft to work with a professional artist, network with members of local craft organisations and exhibit their work in a leading contemporary arts venue.
