(VIDEO) Rhapsody for Clarinet and Wheelchair Basketball Team now online

Rhapsody for Clarinet and Wheelchair Basketball Team is a groundbreaking audio-visual work, that combines music, sound design, film and sport. It was commissioned by the Bluecoat, and premiered as part of DaDaFest 2012 on 28th August 2012.

Now, to celebrate the recent London Paralympics 2012, Rhapsody for Clarinet and Wheelchair Basketball Team has been launched online.

Using recordings of players from Greenbank Wheelchair Basketball Team, Jonathan Hering and Jack Whiteley constructed a dense, visceral and rhythmic sound-and-film collage, over which clarinettist Mandy Burvill performs a specially-composed solo, combining imitative sounds of the game with more lyrical representations of the sport. The piece perfectly captures the excitement of competition with the Paralympic ideals of inspiration, aspiration and achievement.

Musically sitting somewhere between John Zorn's Game Pieces, with their sporting rules transplanted into musical form, the 'found object' percussion tradition utilised by composers from John Cage and Harry Partch to Brian Eno, and the dense and complex programmed work of IDM artists such as Aphex Twin, the further layers of Whiteley's stunning imagery and Burvill's spectacular musicianship make this an artistic experience like no other.
