Hand on Crafts takes on Quilting

This week some of our young people started quilting with Annabel Little, a member of our creative community who has recently exhibited in Landbaby.

Annabel chose to focus on an unusual quilting technique, English paper piecing. This technique was perfect for these workshops, as not only is it all hand sewn (so doesn't require 15 sewing machines) but it is a heritage technique which fits perfectly with our 'at risk' craft brief.

Annabel prepared beautiful pouches with all the materials so the participants could get the most out of their session time. This was a fantastic workshop to watch as some people really took to it, whilst others struggled with the precision required. I'm eager to see who finishes theirs a home this week!

Hand on Crafts is an inter-generational amateur crafts programme, initiated by Voluntary Arts and funded by the Paul Hamlyn Foundation. It offers a two-way approach to improve interest and involvement in specific at-risk traditional crafts amongst young people, whilst developing the skills and abilities of older representatives of traditional crafts organisations to reach out across the age gap.
