Now in its fifth edition, Liverpool Biennial is the UK's largest international festival of contemporary visual art. this years's international exhibition, MADE UP, explores the power of the imagination, and can be seen across the city including Tate Liverpool, FACT, Open Eye Gallery and the Bluecoat. Here, David Blandy (UK), Tracey Moffat (Austrailia), Khalil Rabah (Palestine) and The Royal Art Lodge (Canada) present new, commissioned work, and Sarah Sze (US) a stunning site-specific installation in the Vide.
Made Up at the Bluecoat considers fabricated pasts and imagined futures of utopian worlds, where life might be ideal and harmonious. At the same time the mirror of everyday reality is also present, though sometimes obscured by fantasy. Through video, photography, painting and installation, the artists imagine what might be, invent or conjure what has been, and mix myth and fiction with mischief and spectacle. Ultimately viewrs must decide - what's real and what's made up?
