Grant was born in Liverpool, the child of Russian and Polish Jewish immigrants. Since the publication of her debut novel, The Cast Iron Shore, her work has been much admired for its examination of identity, both personal and cultural. Her latest work is a story about concealed pasts, dark places and stark choices and how the clothes we wear define us all. It has been longlisted for the 2008 Orange Prize and is on the shortlist for the Booker Prize.
