Sound Art is the first retrospective exhibition of award-winning contemporary sound artist, musician and composer Janek Schaefer. It offers visitors a wealth of fascinating, delightful and absorbing audio-visual experiences, and features newly commissioned sound sculpture, National Portrait (the last transmission). For this, Schaefer will record the last 24 hours of analogue television broadcast across Liverpool, to create a unique portrait of a day in the life of the Britain at the tipping point between analogue and digital culture. This is accompanied by a selection of mixed media installations and films spanning the last two decades.

Schaefer was born in England in 1970 and studied architecture at the Royal College of Art. His Recorded Delivery (1995), a recording of the fragmented noises of a sound-activated dictaphone travelling overnight through the Post Office, remains one of the wittiest and most interesting in the field of Sound Art. ‘It is elegant, economical and clever, and makes me wish I'd thought of it first’ Brian Eno. Schaefer’s concerts and installations explore spatial and architectural aspects of sound, often in response to different physical contexts. Using both analogue and digital techniques he manipulates found sound and everyday objects, creating work that is immersive, challenging and evocative.

Multiple aspects of sound are Schaefer’s focus, resulting in many recordings, installations, exhibition soundtracks and live performances using his self built/invented record players with manipulated found sound collage. The Guinness Book of Records list his Tri-phonic Turntable as the 'World's Most Versatile Record Player'. He has performed, lectured and exhibited in Europe, North America, Japan, and Australia. In 2008 he won The British Composer of the Year Award for Sonic Art and The Paul Hamlyn Award for Composers Prize.
