Kwame Dawes presents a combined lecture/performance on the Black Atlantic, exploring how literature, reggae and popular culture have dealt with narratives of the slave trade and the Middle Passage. A Forward Prize for Poetry recipient, he was born in Ghana and spent his early adult life in Jamaica. He teaches at the University of South Carolina and directs the Calabash literature festival in Jamaica. His Bob Marley: Lyrical Genius remains one of the most authoritative studies of Marley’s lyrics.
Ray Costello has written extensively on the Black experience including books which chart the hidden histories, creative talents and pioneering contributions of Merseyside’s African, Caribbean and mixed race communities dating over two and a half centuries.
