Writer Malcolm Lowry described Liverpool as ‘that terrible city whose main street is the ocean’. Born on the other side of the river Mersey in middle-class Wirral, Lowry’s relationship to the Merseyside of his youth informs his writing and Liverpool itself continued to hold tremendous significance for him, even though he lived abroad for most of his life and never returned.

Acclaimed artists are donating exclusive artworks to support the final fit-out of public spaces at the Bluecoat, giving people the chance to bag original works by renowned artists like the Singh Twins, Pete Frame and Leo Fitzmaurice. Iconic pieces, such as a limited edition signed print of the illustration by Yvonne Gilbert, famously used on the cover of the 1983 Frankie Goes To Hollywood single ‘Relax’, are available.

The final debate of the Liverpool Debates 2007 series ‘Liverpool believes that it’s time for Liverpool and Manchester to join forces’ was a close run thing with 51% of the audience voting for the motion and 49% voting against at St George’s Hall on 11th October.
