Leave a gift in your Will

Family at a heritage-themed family weekend

A gift in a Will is a chance to protect the places, people and organisations you care about for future generations.

As a registered charity, leaving a gift in your Will to Bluecoat can help us invest in our long-term future. You may be a regular visitor who enjoys our lovely Espresso Cafe; a lover of our inspiring exhibitions; or a supporter of our work with artists and audiences of all backgrounds.

Whatever your motivation, your gift, of any size, can make a real difference to Bluecoat.

How to leave a gift to Bluecoat

To leave a gift to Bluecoat, you need to use our charity details which include our name, address and charity number:

The Bluecoat, School Lane, Liverpool, L1 3BX

Registered Charity No. 700862

You can ask a solicitor to draw up a Will for you, or if you already have one it may be possible to use a codicil, a supplementary document which allows you to amend your existing Will without the need to draw up a new one.

No matter what you decide, we strongly recommend talking to a solicitor when updating or making a Will to ensure it reflects your wishes and is legally valid.

Types of gifts

There are different types of gift you can choose to leave to a charity in your Will:

A residuary gift

This kind of gift helps make sure your family and loved ones are taken care of first. You can leave a percentage of whatever is left over to Bluecoat, after all your other gifts of money and items have been distributed.

An example of text could you use:

“I leave to The Bluecoat, School Lane, Liverpool, L1 3BX, Registered Charity No. 700862, ...% of my residuary estate for its charitable purposes and I direct that the receipt of the Head of Development or other duly authorised officer shall be a sufficient discharge to my Executors”.

A pecuniary gift

This is a gift of money of a specific amount. You can index link your gift if you wish, to stop it losing value over time.

An example of text you could use:

“I leave to The Bluecoat, School Lane, Liverpool, L1 3BX, Registered Charity No. 700862, the sum of £... for its charitable purposes and I direct that the receipt of the Head of Development or other duly authorised officer shall be a sufficient discharge to my Executors”.

A specific gift

This is a gift of a specific, named item. For example, it could be a work of art, property or a piece of jewellery.

Tax benefits to you

Gifts you leave to charity in your Will are exempt from Inheritance Tax. As Bluecoat is a registered charity, any gift you decide to leave can be used in its entirety, meaning your generosity can go even further.

You can also reduce the amount of Inheritance Tax payable from 40% to 36% by leaving 10% of your net estate to a charity.

Visit the Government website for more information.
