Liverpool's centre for the contemporary arts

Oriele Steiner

Artist Oriele Steiner is currently based at The Royal Standard as the recipient of the New Contemporaries' studio bursary in partnership with Bluecoat.

Oriele (b. 1993, London) gained her BA Fine Art: Painting from The University of Brighton (2015) and exhibited at Bluecoat in 2016 as part of the Bloomberg New Contemporaries 2016 exhibition.

The artist believes art should come forth from within, as well as being a depiction of the external visual world. The ideas and colours of Oriele’s work are intended to be playful and innocent, in a world which doesn’t always allow for this to be expressed.

She has taken inspiration from the still-life of the Impressionists, Post-Impressionism. More recently she has been influenced by ‘Naïve’ art or 'Art Brut' and contemporary ideas of simplicity in painting, which has led the artist to create a series of narrative paintings and drawings. The drawings capture a moment with an image or directly from the imagination. Here, she transposes her imagination, eye and memory on to a piece of paper, which become the beginnings of new ideas that extend beyond the paper on to a new mode of working - oil paint on canvas.
