A view from T & I (part 1)

Jack, Information AssistantAs an Information Assistant, you are responsible for being the ‘face’ of the Bluecoat, the very first point of call for visitors as well as acting as an interface between front of house and staff. Performing these duties means that the majority of your working day is split between either invigilating the Galleries or manning our Tickets & Information, located in the Hub which is the main space when you first enter the building. As you can imagine, a lot of time spent in the Hub allows you to observe the everyday comings and goings here and as a result, I now think I have enough material to pen a sitcom loosely based on the everyday life in a respected arts institution.

While events earlier in the year have temporarily denied us the continued pleasure of full usage of the building, one of positives to emerge in my eyes has been the way that the Hub has taken on more responsibility to become the very focal point in everyday Bluecoat life. When you spend enough time working in one place, it becomes your office, your environment, and as a result you do develop affection for the space, as well as developing obsessive compulsive disorder with constantly lining up leaflets on display.

I am therefore delighted with the prospect of watching the Hub become even more animated later in the month when a programme of after-work music, live art, events and happenings is launched under the moniker, ‘Hubbub’.

It looks like the office is going to get a bit louder.
