The final debate of the Liverpool Debates 2007 series ‘Liverpool believes that it’s time for Liverpool and Manchester to join forces’ was a close run thing with 51% of the audience voting for the motion and 49% voting against at St George’s Hall on 11th October.

MEP for the Northwest region Arlene McCarthy proposed the motion and was supported by Lyn Barbour, director of Creative Industries Development Service in Manchester.

Jayne Casey, co-founder of Cream and 08 launch celebration organiser and Rogan Taylor, director, Football Industry Group, University of Liverpool, opposed the motion, arguing that Liverpool and Manchester can thrive without each other’s help.

Kath Worrall, broadcaster and Content Board Member of Ofcom, acted as chairwoman over the debate.

The audience included several movers and shakers from both cities and the debate was intelligent with well-argued points.

ECHO readers who took part in a pre-debate poll disagreed with the suggestion that the two cities should join forces with 57.7% of people voting no to the motion.
