Bluecoat’s diverse exhibition programme presents the work of established international artists alongside younger, emerging voices.

In addition to our exhibition programme we host a year-long programme of live events, including musical recitals, drama, performance art, lectures, readings and symposiums.

Our volunteers play a crucial role in Bluecoat’s daily operations, providing a friendly and informative welcome to the galleries, building relationships with visitors and supporting the delivery of events. Volunteering at Bluecoat is a great way to enrich your knowledge of the arts, meet new people and see behind the scenes of a busy arts centre.

Joining Bluecoat as a volunteer has many benefits:

New experiences and skills - Volunteering is a great way to work on your interpersonal skills and learn how exhibitions are received by the general public. There are opportunities to get involved in different aspects of Bluecoat’s work across arts, heritage and participation, allowing you to make more informed decisions about your future and expand your CV.

Socialising - Meet people who share your interests and gain a more nuanced view of Liverpool’s creative ecology.

Deepen your understanding and appreciation of contemporary artistic disciplines - Bluecoat volunteers are able to attend tours of our exhibitions and Q&A sessions with artists and curators before they open to the public.

Attend a range of world-class cultural events as an Event Steward - Bluecoat regularly hosts concerts, readings, symposiums, dance recitals and other cultural events. Recent highlights have included the world premiere of Elaine Mitchener’s SWEET TOOTH and Pierre Henry’s The Liverpool Mass.

Access to professional development and career guidance - Bluecoat has held talks given by our curatorial team, networking events and one-on-one mentoring sessions with staff members as part of the volunteer programme.

Julia: "I started volunteering at Bluecoat when I was considering moving my career into the arts sector.  As well as regular shifts as a Gallery Assistant, and also helped with the installation of exhibitions. I really enjoy the way that volunteering gives me the chance to talk to so many people about what’s on.  It’s a real pleasure to help visitors get the most out of their visit, and also meet people who broaden my own awareness and knowledge. I’ve felt very valued and appreciated as a volunteer at Bluecoat. The team have been very supportive of what I want to get out of volunteering, and provide information and support for helping me make decisions about my future career path".

Ed: "Having visited Bluecoat many times I was well aware of the organisation's unique approach to exhibition, performance and its crucial role as Liverpool's main cultural hub.  During one visit I noted that volunteers were being sought and I approached the organisation directly. Volunteering at Bluecoat has been an extremely rewarding experience both personally and professionally, my colleagues both employed staff and other volunteers made me feel immediately welcome.  A thorough and comprehensive volunteer induction programme meant that I was fully briefed as to my role and responsibilities as a volunteer gallery invigilator, a role which I have found both stimulating and rewarding. What makes volunteering at Bluecoat different is the respect which volunteers are accorded by employed colleagues, there is a real sense that our contribution to the day to day staffing of the galleries is genuinely appreciated and our feedback and observations are taken onboard".
