We Never Walked Alone

  • Thu, 15 Sep 2011 - Wed, 29 Feb 2012
  • 10.00 AM - 5.00 PM

This new exhibition in the Reds Gallery at the Bluecoat traces the inspiration, humour and celebrations of Liverpool FC’s adoring fans.

Liverpool FC's passionate fans are famous the world over. From the noise and humour generated by those who are lucky enough to fill Anfield, the travelling reds who have ticked off European Cities one by one, to the many millions around the world, who can only dream of getting to Anfield, they all share the same love – Liverpool FC.

Tracing the roots back via the City of Liverpool’s radical history, fans of Liverpool's iconic club have always seemed unique. There’s been a lot to celebrate over the years, highs and lows which have only helped to forge a bigger sense of togetherness.  This special exhibition captures those selected moments and stories of the bonds created.

On their travels, Liverpool fans have many tales involving planes, trains and automobiles. With no shortage of finals to follow their team, the travelling Kop has set up camp at many locations.

The roar from the 12th Man at Anfield, has unnerved some of the most established and respected stars over the years, including a certain England Captain at the Champions League Semi Final in 2005 who made reference to the effect on his performance in his Autobiography.

How many clubs fans always clap the opposition keeper as a sign of respect when they run towards the home end? Who has a more emotive and iconic song than Gerry Marsden’s YNWA, adopted by the Kop and now bellowed out with such passion before every game?

We know every fan will have their own favourite fan related moment or maybe have captured their own and we want you to share yours with us.  Just send your photo via twitter, The Kop or by email and the winner will have theirs showcased in the Reds Gallery for all to see. For more information on how you can enter and full terms and conditions please visit www.liverpoolfc.tv/redsgallery.

We hope you enjoy the images on display and remember, everything you see can be purchased in the gallery, just ask a member of staff for details or online at www.liverpoolfc.tv/redsgallery.

“The word fanatic has been used many times.. I think it’s more than fanaticism. It’s a religion to them. The thousands who come here, come to worship.. it’s a sort of shrine, it isn’t a football ground.”

Bill Shankly

“The only thing I fear is missing an open goal in front of the Kop. I would die if that were to happen. When they start singing ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ my eyes start to water. There have been times when I’ve actually been crying while I’ve been playing.”

Kevin Keegan on The Kop

“When a Liverpool crowd is up for it and behind the team it’s unbelievable – the feeling you get stepping out, you feel stronger. I can’t emphasise enough how their support is helpful to us. The players all appreciate it. They have won games for us over the years. They’ll do it again, too. The fans are a massive part of this club. They are the club.”

Steven Gerrard after sitting with the Traveling Kop at Villa Park 2011

“Chairman Mao has never seen a greater show of red strength.”

Bill Shankly addressing the Liverpool fans who turned up in their thousands to welcome the team home despite losing to Arsenal in the 1971 FA Cup final

“I'm just one of the people who stands on the kop. They think the same as I do, and I think the same as they do. It's a kind of marriage of people who like each other.”

Bill Shankly

“Before, I said that they were maybe the best supporters in England. Now maybe they are the best supporters in Europe.”

Rafa Benitez

“This is the best club in the world with the best fans, so I'm very proud to be a Liverpool player”

Jamie Carragher
