Beginners Acrylic Painting (10 Week Course)

Explore and investigate a broad range of traditional and contemporary painting processes and practices, focusing on the use of acrylics, with reknowned artist and experienced teacher Richard Meaghan. Suitable for beginners.

This painting course will be open to all abilities from complete beginners who haven’t done art since school, to those who use art as a hobby, as well as artists wanting help developing their own work and practise. Over the course of 10 weeks, you will develop your awareness of painting as a unique means of visual communication. Through practical work you will consolidate your knowledge of visual grammar and expand your visual literacy. You will consider how ideas, information and feelings can be articulated, transformed and conveyed through visual systems, processes and conventions. As well as having the opportunity to reflect on historical precedents and draw upon your own experiences, you will be encouraged to explore your own aesthetic abilities and visual judgements which will form a fundamental part of your practise.

The course will be led by professional artist Richard Meaghan is currently based in a studio at Metal in Liverpool. He studied Fine Art at Staffordshire university, and on graduating, was awarded a travel grant to study Renaissance Art in Italy. The resulting work was awarded first prize in the Sefton Open, followed shortly with his first solo Public exhibition at the Atkinson Art gallery, Southport.

Life Drawing (10 Week Course)

Roy Munday leads a 10 week programme of evening lessons developing your skills in life drawing, including accurate measuring, colour and drawing techniques. Suitable for both newcomers, beginners and those continuing from previous courses, as the tutor will tailor the material to individual participants.

The course is aimed at adults of any age, both beginners and the more advanced, who want to work directly from both the nude and clothed model. Though the course is for ten weeks, it’s intended that students will want to continue for further weeks. Students will progress at their own pace in a friendly, relaxed and flexible class. The course will start with the basics of drawing the whole figure to achieve technical accuracy by learning how to measure. Once the student has learned the basic drawing skills, they can if they wish, through the guidance of the tutor, move on to the intermediate course and be introduced to using a medium of their choice: watercolour, acrylics etc.

Jewellery Making

Learn the basic techniques of jewellery making and make a piece of jewellery each week!

This course, led by Amy Ridyard, includes how to use a jeweller's piercing saw, drilling, filing and polishing metal correctly and how to create colour, texture and patinas on metal.

Experimenting with Mixed Media

Explore and create with mixed media on canvas.

Mixed media art is a type of visual art which incorporates various types of art media. By combining textures with unusual mediums, the end result is the creative accomplishment. Many techniques, materials and compositions play off each other when creating the piece. There is adventure in not knowing where you are going with it until you get there!

This workshop, led by Eimear Kavanagh, will present several methods of collecting and arranging, cutting apart and reconnecting, and building materials onto canvas.

This workshop is suitable for any anybody who loves experiment with colour and pattern, or anybody who has never tried before and just wants to have a go!

Beginners Digital Photography

Develop your photography skills in this introductory one day course, covering the basics of digital cameras and an overview of Exposure and Composition with a practical workshop of People and Place.

Photography is an ever evolving practice of technical craft and creative flair. The basis of a good image lies i combining both the art and science. In this workshop we will aim to balance the theory with practical.

Bryn Davies will lead the workshop. Bryn is an award winning Fine Art Photographer, accredited by the British Institute of Professional Photography and current Photographer of the Year. Based locally, Bryn has exhibited internationally and contributed to Liverpool festivals such as LOOK/15 and the Independents Biennial in 2012.
