My paintings have always been about the landscape. I use the relationships of light, distance and colour within the landscape as a metaphor for emotional and spiritual states. I have painted vast, panoramic, empty places with an ambiguous sense of scale and sometimes subject matter exploring this idea of the landscape as a reflection of a state of mind - an internal world.
More recently, however, my viewpoint has shifted from the depiction of wide-open spaces and vistas to the more intimate, close-up incidents within the landscape. Although the viewpoint has changed, the content remains the same. I am still using the effects of light, colour and space found in the landscape to create an image about personal reflection and contemplation.
I am an American artist living and working in Liverpool since moving here in 1988. I feel a deep and abiding connection to this city - its arts, culture and people. Having a studio at the Bluecoat allows me to strengthen my links with the rich and vibrant creative community of Liverpool.
