Blue Room
Blue Room at the Bluecoat
Blue Room is an award-winning arts service for people with learning disabilities that operates three days a week at the Bluecoat in partnership with Liverpool City Council. Our members attend Blue Room one day each week to create artwork in response to exhibitions at the Bluecoat.
Each project enables our members to work alongside a professional artist, with whom they collaborate to develop their creative responses to the exhibition. The resulting artwork has been wide ranging including painting, film, performance art, large scale drawings, collage, printmaking, multimedia and animation.
As well as specific creative skills, the activities encourage confidence and independence. Some of our more experienced members are workshop assistants in Blue Room, supporting other members. Some Blue Room members are now volunteering to support mainstream programmes at the Bluecoat.
Much of the success of Blue Room relies on the pool of artists with whom the groups work and the links they help form with the exhibition programme. They bring the creative inspiration that gets everyone thinking and working together. Supported by our Blue Room Facilitator they bring expertise in a range of skills including painting, ceramics, print, new media and performance.
Blue Room was awarded Best Emerging Community Arts Project at the Dada Awards in 2008, a proud moment for all.
At the moment Blue Room is only available to service users of Liverpool City Council’s day services.
