School Resources

Dedicated in 1717, Bluecoat is the oldest building in Liverpool city centre and the UNESCO World Heritage Site. It began life as a charitable boarding school for poor children, and in the early 20th century became the UK's first arts centre, a role that continues today.

During 2017, our 300th anniversary year, we worked with local primary schools to create a range of exciting and engaging resources for KS1 and KS2. These resources investigate the history and heritage of Bluecoat as well as exploring themes across the national curriculum such as childhood in the 19th century, the river Mersey, changes in living memory and art in Liverpool.

These resources will be available to download from July 2018.

My Bluecoat

Thanks to National Lottery funding, we are developing a project called My Bluecoat which will bring alive the building’s heritage. The project will bring together information about the building’s transformation from charity school in the 18th and 19th centuries to the UK’s first arts centre in the 20th century by digitising archives held at Bluecoat, Liverpool Record Office, the current Blue Coat School in Wavertree, and elsewhere, making them publicly accessible for the first time.

Involving schools and sharing Bluecoat’s story with the children of Liverpool is extremely important to the My Bluecoat project. Bluecoat started out as a school and children play a central role in its story. We are keen to make sure that is true about Bluecoat’s future as well as the building’s past.

If you would like further information about the My Bluecoat education programme or have any questions about how your school can become involved please contact liv.m@thebluecoat.org.uk or call 0151 702 5324

My Bluecoat has been supported by a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund. Thanks to National Lottery players, this major initiative will digitise the archives from a number of key sources, bringing these fascinating records together for the first time alongside memories from the public.
