        		Private view: 4pm-7pm, Thursday 26 April 2012
Exhibition continues: 10am-6.00pm daily until 9 June 2012 as part of Liverpool Art Month
Seven artists from the Bluecoatrs creative community have joined together to create this exhibition for Liverpool Art Month. They have taken the Vide* at the Bluecoat as an inspiration point, which lead them to explore the constructs, connotations and implications of lthe Voidr.* The Vide is the multiple height space you can see in to from the ground floor by the lift and down in to from Top Floor exhibition space. It was called the Vide by its architects: Biq Architecten (of Rotterdam, NL) as it means lvoidr in Dutch.
Lisa Cole Kronenburg
Fissure, painting, 2012
The paintings I have included in this exhibition allude to the presence of a void n whether it is the distance beyond the horizon, the formless space of a floating world or the gap between two planes. While the idea of absence, emptiness, nothingness or lstaring into the abyssr can arouse feelings of terror and futility, for me the spaces in-between or the spaces beyond invite contemplation and reflection. The emptiness in my paintings is full of the possibility, the hope, that there is something beyond my reach or comprehension. It is this emptiness or lvoidr that gives meaning, structure and substance to my work.
Lucy Fry
lVoidr can hold positive connotations n empty space can be a liberating factor, blank canvas providing an opportunity to create. Here I explore the offsetting of positive and negative material, how void space can be exciting and dynamic, and an integral part of design.
Jeanne-Marie

Home is Where I Live Inside Me, Oil on board, 2012
welcome, friends,to the voidthere is nothing to feara void is a temporary statea void is space for something new to happenat night you clear your mindentering darkness, you sleepthe void becomes a space for dreaminga void is a sacred spacemy head is filled with imagesso many, i don't know which way to turntime to make a painting of emptinessnow there is space for me to know what comes next
Rosalind Hargreaves

Painting, 2012
To enter somewhere and experience a sense of loss can be a realisation of the value of what was once present. The presence of absence can have a poignancy which can evoke a sadness yet a concurrently very positive memory. Sometimes it is on recalling a place, sometimes it is on going back and physically entering these spaces that the void encountered highlights the need for that which fulfils- the replete and the beautiful. In response to the void the work seeks to capture the reality of emptiness and desolation with the human need for that which is abundant.
Bob Porter
Text to follow shortly.
Markus Soukup

Silverline , 2008 n 2012, print on aluminium, 20x20cm
Two photographs made out of one, taken during a sailing trip in the Mediterranean sea from Gibraltar to Cadiz in 2008. A memorable moment of being at a certain time at a particular geographical location. A basic meditative fascination 'made' by a constellation and defined by the position of the subject in relation to the earth's position in the solar system. A possibility to wonder if the moment might have (had) an impact on the time after. The work plays with the impact of 'framing' in relation to the perception of a whole and how our perception and interpretation depends on our concepts of understanding based upon (scientific) knowledge.
Christine Toh

Installation, 2012
Hundreds of asylum seekers and refugees are detained in British prisons beyond the time of their sentence without any reasonable justification. With no time limit on immigration detention powers detainees can be locked up for weeks, months or in some cases even years waiting for their cases to be resolved. The distress endured has been proved to damage mental health of detainees. This piece of work tries to capture the infinite feeling of emptiness and hopelessness detainees are confronted with and the complete depravation of hope to hang on to. Facing the unknown or the void they are just hanging on a thin thread that could snap anytime.	]]>

Curated by Bergit Arends and Greg Hilty
The Galapagos archipelago uniquely exemplifies the delicate tension between a pristine environment and human curiosity and intervention. Over 5 years, 12 artists visited these remote and beguiling islands returning home with film footage, drawings, photographs, sculptures, sounds and imaginings. The resulting exhibition offers a surprising and contemporary insight into the cultural reality, the human stories and the living laboratory of Galapagos.
Artists featured: Jyll Bradley, Paulo Catrica, Filipa Cesar, Marcus Coates, Dorothy Cross (with actor Fiona Shaw), Alexis Deacon, Jeremy Deller, Tania Kovats, Kaffe Matthews, Semiconductor (Ruth Jarman and Joe Gerhardt) and Alison Turnbull.
The Gulbenkian Galapagos Artists Residency Programme and Galapagos exhibition were organised by the Galapagos Conservation Trust in partnership with the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, with additional support from the Charles Darwin Foundation and the Natural History Museum, London. www.artistsvisitgalapagos.com

A concert focused on two great 20th Century artistic figures: John Cage and Yves Klein. Both were fascinated with the idea of absence, nothingness, the void. Cagers 1952 work 4r33r instructs performers not to play their instruments during the performance, a radical statement Tickets: p5 / p3.
Frakture acknowledges the voluntary work of its staff and musicians, and the financial support of Arts Council England.

Roy Munday (an experinced trainer and artist, who has been teaching life drawing for many years) leads a 10 week programme of evening lessons developing your skills in life drawing, including accurate measuring, colour and drawing and painting techniques.
Program: The course is aimed at adults of any age, both beginners and the more advanced, who want to work directly from both the nude and clothed model. Though the course is for ten weeks, itrs intended that students will want to continue for further weeks. Students will progress at their own pace in a friendly, relaxed and flexible class. The course will start with the basics of drawing the whole figure to achieve technical accuracy by learning how to measure. Once the student has learned the basic drawing skills, they can, through the guidance of the tutor, move on to using a medium of their choice: watercolour, acrylics etc. Students will be encouraged to experiment with different styles, such as impressionistic and abstract, so that they can acquire their own individual style. Students will also be encouraged to work and research in between teaching sessions, but this isnrt obligatory. At the end of the first ten weeks, itrs intended that students will have gained both competence and confidence to want to continue the class for a further ten weeks. Notes: There are a maximum of 15 places available on the course, so early booking is essential. To avoid a booking fee and pay by card, cheque or cash, please contact dot-art Services directly on 0845 017 6660. Comments from participants in previous life drawing sessions: "Excellent in all respects, very well timed with introduction, rest, practice, rest, more practice..." "Exceeded expectations. Good atmosphere, very conducive to learning. Trainer worked us hard, but I learnt a great deal about the discipline of drawing." lI found the tutor very informative and helpful".

With Ken Worpole, Tony Wailey a Francis Boyce.
Writing on the Wall have been given a treasure trove of original documents once owned by writer a merchant seaman, George Garrett (1896-1966). This vital documentary evidence, brought out of a family suitcase, further illustrates what we know of George Garrett; seaman, poet, playwright, story writer, traveller, organiser, dissenter, anarcho communist, but adds even more, with original manuscripts and unpublished material, including plays and poetry. To celebrate the life and work of this barely known cultural whirlwind, Writing on the Wall invites you to join Ken Worpole (Dockers and Detectives), Tony Wailey (Edgy Cities) and Francis Boyce to discuss his work and his achievements and to launch The George Garrett Archive Project.Ken Worpole will develop the themes of his early essay on George Garrett in his 1984 book, Dockers a Detectives (new Five Leaves edition, 2009), in the light of more recently published Garrett writings, concentrating on Garrett's intense, spare literary style and its strong sense of social justice. Tony Wailey will explore Garrettrs work in the context of the position of the seaman and the working class in the 1920rs and 30rs, and Francis Boyce will share his recently published chapter, 'Liverpool-City of Storytellers?' in which he discusses George Garrettrs work.Ken Worpole is a former teacher, community activist, and author of many books on literature, landscape and architecture. These include, Dockers a Detectives (1984), Staying Close to the River (1996), Here Comes the Sun: architecture and public space in 20th century European culture (2001), Last Landscapes: the architecture of the cemetery in the West (2003), and most recently, Modern Hospice Design: the architecture of palliative care (2009). He is currently a Senior Professor at The Cities Institute, London Metropolitan University.Tony Wailey is the author of eight books including pocket size novels and three collections of poetry. Originally a seaman, his work concerns the cosmopolitan nature of the maritime city. He wrote Edgy Cities with Steve Higginson which featured in the 2007 Writing on the Wall festival and spoke last year on the work of George Garrett. His book Our Party, will be published by Ikraal Media later this year.Francis Boyce has written extensively on Garrett's life and work, recently contributing a chapter, 'Liverpool-City of Storytellers?' on the work of George Garrett and James Hanley to Liverpool John Moores University publication, Merseyside Culture and Space.
