Romantic Moderns: English Writers, Artists and the Imagination from Virginia Woolf to John Piper

Alexandra Harris is the winner of this year’s Guardian first book prize for Romantic Moderns (Thames & Hudson Ltd). Here she presents a radically new interpretation of the arts in the years between the wars. Harris argues that far from being sentimental, writers and artists such as Betjeman, du Maurier, Piper and Sutherland drew on English and European traditions to create an English renaissance which pitched nostalgia and modernism side by side and left an extraordinary cultural legacy across all the arts.

Harris was recently announced as one of the winners of BBC Radio 3’s New Generation Thinkers Scheme. She currently lectures in English at the University of Liverpool.  Discover more about her prize-winning book, described by one judge as ‘a significant contribution to English culture’.
