Little Atom Productions Present Paul Du Noyer’s ‘The Art of The Album Cover’
In ‘The Art of the Album Cover’ Paul Du Noyer surveys a popular art form that flourished for 50 years and is only now passing into history.
LP sleeves were born when vinyl records replaced 78rpm discs in the 1950s. They became a vivid symbol of their times, serving commercialism, vanity and creative ambition. The images invented for album covers include the best-known visuals of the late 20th century, from Sgt Pepper to Nevermind but even the least-known LP covers are evocative documents of their time and are frequently outstanding examples of design.
Paul's talk will take in album art of the famous, the infamous and the deservedly obscure, always with an eye to the stories that these sleeves tell us. To complement the talk – and the visual display of more than 50 superb covers – there will be live performances by local musicians inspired by some of the great albums under discussion.
Paul Du Noyer is an author, journalist and editor with over 30 years’ involvement in the music scene. Along the way his interviewees have ranged from Madonna to Pavarotti, David Bowie to Mick Jagger and nearly everyone with a strong connection to The Beatles, not least Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr. Born in Liverpool, Paul was educated at the London School of Economics. He has written the definitive musical histories of both Liverpool and London. He has edited Q Magazine and was the Founding Editor of Mojo.
