Researcher Sally Blackburn chooses a section from Vernon Lee's Aesthetic Responsiveness: Its Variations and Accompaniments in response to Left Hand To Back of Head, Object Held Against Right Thigh, focusing on emotional and physiological responses to art work.

Vernon Lee was the pseudonym of the British writer Violet Paget (1856 – 1935). She is remembered today primarily for her supernatural fiction and her work on aesthetics. She was also known for her numerous essays about travel in Italy, France, Germany, and Switzerland, which attempted to capture the psychological effects of places rather than convey any particular piece of information.

The reading group will introduce extracts from her essay Aesthetic Responsiveness and from Lee's diary. Blackburn will focus on Lee's interest in the emotional and physiological aspects of art appreciation.
