Marking the 70th anniversary of Malcolm Lowry’s great modernist novel Under the Volcano and 60 years since the Merseyside-born writer’s death, this conference organised by Liverpool John Moores University and Bluecoat, will examine his legacy, literary status and continuing inspiration.
It features presentations and panel discussions from leading international Lowry scholars including keynote speakers Professor Emerita Sherrill Grace and Professor Michael Schmidt.

Bluecoat also hosts a free archival display and film screenings over the weekend. Plus the launch at Bluecoat of Shot Under the Volcano, an installation created as a collaboration between artist, John Hyatt, newly-appointed Professor of Contemporary Art at Liverpool John Moores University, and design and innovation company Uniform.

In tandem with the Malcolm Lowry Under the Volcano conference artists Alan Dunn, Jeff Young and Martin Heslop have been commissioned to explore Lowry’s relationship with his New Brighton birthplace, working with retired merchant seafarers from Mariners’ Park.
The performance, The Lighthouse Invites the Storm, will be at Bluecoat on Fri 28 Jul, with a special acoustic session at Mariners' Park Care Home, Royden Avenue, Wallasey, CH44 0HN on Sat 29 Jul.
