Celebrate Bluecoat’s 300th birthday as part of national Heritage Open Days

Bluecoat is 300 years old! Celebrate with us as we open our doors for a week filled with heritage-inspired events and activities for all the family.

Wed 6 Sep 6.30pm

Dan Cruickshank: Bluecoat and Liverpool’s Georgian Buildings

£10/£8

Join TV art historian and architecture expert Dan Cruickshank, best known for his popular BBC2 series The Best Buildings of Britain and What the Industrial Revolution Did For Us, for an insightful talk reflecting on Bluecoat’s architectural history within the context of 18th century Liverpool.

Thu 7 – Sat 9 Sep

Book now for one of our free heritage tours to discover the architecture and history of Bluecoat, plus go behind the scenes to view our artist studios. Immerse yourself in POOL (Fri 8 – Sun 10 Sep) by INHABIT artist Mary Prestidge, an installation inspired by Bluecoat’s hidden space which was once a swimming pool used by members of an arts community based in the building.

On Saturday and Sunday you can see Roderick Maclachlan's latest film installation, commissioned especially for Bluecoat's anniversary, which harnesses the principle elements of film, time and light, to celebrate the spectrum.  Spin combines elements of child’s play, a whirling girl and a spinning top, with the kinetic refraction of Sir Isaac Newton’s experiments with sunlight in a 35mm film projected through prisms. Newton’s Opticks, or, A Treatise of the Reflexions, Refractions, Inflexions and Colours of Light was published in 1704 just a few years before Reverend Styth founded The Blue Coat School in 1708. The emerging science of light and colour was widely debated at the time the school was established.

On Sat 9 Sep drop into Explore (1-4pm) for free family activities that will inspire your young artist to watch, play, read and make in this special heritage inspired session.

Sun 10 Sep
