Merseyside Film Institute: The Director's Cut

Britain’s oldest film society, Merseyside Film Institute was based at Bluecoat for over 60 years. An early art house cinema dating from 1934, its theatre was hugely popular, offering an eclectic range of films, old and new, from classics to the latest independent, European, American and World cinema.

As part of Bluecoat’s 300th birthday in 2017, the arts centre is working with key people involved in the MFI to organise a special day-long event on Sat 7 Oct celebrating the cinema. 

10.30am - 3.25pm 
Merseyside Film Institute: The Director’s Cut 
Ticket prices: £10/7

The Director’s Cut will consider the vital role the society played in Liverpool’s cultural life. It includes guest speaker Ramsey Campbell, a visit to the cinema’s old location, a discussion with ex-members and another looking at local independent cinema provision today, plus an archive display. Click here to book.

Don Quixote (1933, Dir. GW Pabst) 
Ticket prices: £4/3. 

There will also be two screenings: the first, Don Quixote (Dir. GW Pabst), was the society’s first film shown in 1933. Click here to book.

6 - 8pm 
Aguirre, Wrath of God (1972, Dir. Werner Herzog)
Ticket prices: £4/3. 

The second, Aguirre, Wrath of God, was quite probably one of the most popular film that Merseyside Film Institute ever screenedClick here to book.

This is maverick director Werner Herzog's visionary tale of the ruthless, probably mad, Don Lope de Aguirre as he leads an expedition of Spanish conquistadors in 16th century Peru in search of the mythical El Dorado.
