Emma Smith Euphonia

  • Fri, 27 Apr 2018 - Sun, 24 Jun 2018
  • 11.00 AM - 6.00 PM

This Spring we are delighted to welcome British artist Emma Smith to Bluecoat with her solo exhibition, Euphonia

Bluecoat’s gallery is transformed in this ground-breaking new sound installation by Emma Smith, based on the music of social communication. Euphonia is an interactive sound work illustrating how we unconsciously make music through interlocking rhythms, pitch and tone when we engage in friendly interactions - such as chitchat with friends.  Smith will draw from sounds created by the many people who visit Bluecoat on a daily basis –parents and babies, visitors to the café and the choirs and groups who rehearse there in the evenings.

Inside the Gallery visitors are invited to interact with a specially designed musical score, soak up the sound installations or sit and read. The exhibition is suitable for all ages and each week (at 10am on a Thursday) there will be a quiet hour when we will turn down the volume for visitors who need or prefer lower levels of sound.
