LightNight 2018 at Bluecoat

  • Fri, 18 May 2018
  • 5.00 PM - 10.00 PM
  • Tickets: Free, drop-in

On LightNight we open our doors for an evening of music, fun and the chance to get involved in hands on family activities! Spend the evening in our garden with choirs, DJs, live musicians and then refuel with our outdoor bar and barbecue.

This LightNight, Bluecoat will be embracing the 2018 theme of Transformation, by turning our spaces into a truly immersive, engaging and interactive realm.

Family activities - From 6pm-9pm we will transport little ones and their adults to a magical and enchanting world. Storytelling sessions will run every half hour from 6pm - 8:30pm and will be led by our Participation team and Gav Cross from Funny Looking, who will be transforming into characters from long ago with storytelling, mask making and creative activities suitable for all the family. Hear the ancient story of  “Sir Gawain & The Green Knight” retold within an immersive ‘StoryCave’.

Contemporary Dance - Between 6pm-7:30pm POP-UP Duets (fragments of love) will perform; a series of contemporary dance duets that will transform Bluecoat’s building and exterior spaces into performance for ‘accidental’ audiences.

Late Night Exhibition opening - The gallery will be open until late, with visitors being able to view our spring exhibition from Emma Smith. Euphonia transforms Bluecoat’s gallery into a sonic chamber, enabling the viewer to turn into a participant who is invited to contribute by  adding their own voice to the exhibition.

Artist Talks - On behalf of RRU and The Culture Company, on LightNight we will also be hosting a talk at 6:30pm from Hannah Bays who is currently in residence at RRU in St Johns. Hannah will be discussing the 3 new paintings she has produced as part of her residency, focussing particularly on products from Liverpool’s former Bryant and May factory, which will be exhibited at Bluecoat for a month after LightNight.

Music, print and artist studio tours

Relax in our garden to the sound of the Halcyon Syncopators (7:45), take part in hands-on screen print activities in the Print Studio and meet the print artists who work behind the scenes at Bluecoat (6pm-7:30pm).

LightNight also gives the opportunity to look round some of our artist's studios. Between 6pm - 7:30pm, get a behind the scenes look at the Open Studio of Pete Clarke, an artist selected to show as part of the 2018 John Moores Painting Prize, Leo Fitzmaurice who will be showing at The Walker later on this year, artist + architect Annabel Little - curator of the independent arts space at 17 Love Lane and Juniper Press

Food, Drink & Retail

We’re opening up our garden bar for the evening, serving up local craft beers, glasses of fizz and soft drinks. Grab some great food for all the family from the BBQ, freshly prepared by the Bluecoat kitchen.

Many of our Creative Community retailers are also staying open late, so you can pop in for a browse.

Part of LightNight 2018 will see Janis Claxton Dance's POP-UP Duets (fragments of love) perform at Bluecoat. When Adrienne O’Leary and James Southwards emerge, hand-in-hand from a crowd, they could be any young couple  on a first date. POP-UP Duets is a series of 5-minute contemporary dance duets that will take over Bluecoat’s building and exterior spaces. Transforming everyday settings into performance for unsuspecting or ‘accidental’ audiences. Each duet is accompanied by an original soundtrack specifically composed for Bluecoat.

6pm onwards / Free, no booking required

This event is part of the ninth annual LightNight Liverpool, the free one-night arts festival, which is taking place on Fri 18 May 2018.

LightNight showcases the creative lifeblood of Liverpool, presenting new and ambitious artistic commissions amidst a vibrant programme of more than 100 events including everything from concerts, exhibitions, hands-on workshops and dance to street performance, theatre and talks.

It’s the perfect chance to enjoy the bustling atmosphere and experience the city’s cultural offer after-hours with friends and family.

This LightNight we will question and reflect upon the transformative nature of the self and the world around us. Understood as a significant change in people or place, ‘transformation’ is happening all around us: visible or invisible, turbulent and political, personal and emotional.

LightNight Liverpool is produced by local social enterprise Open Culture

Festival guides can be purchased from selected venues across the city centre 1-18 May, or ordered online at
