Shy Radicals & Shrinking Violets

  • 6.30 PM - 8.00 PM
  • Tickets: £10/£5

Writing on the Wall Festival and Bluecoat are delighted to invite Hamja Ahsan and Joe Moran to discuss the politics and culture of shyness.

Ahsan in SHY RADICALS: THE ANTISYSTEMIC POLITICS OF THE MILITANT INTROVERT (2017, BOOK WORKS) has written a call to arms for the politically motivated introvert to quietly challenge extrovert-supremacist politics and assertiveness culture of the twenty first century while making real political change.

Moran in his social-cultural history of shyness Shrinking Violets (2016, Profile) charts shyness through the ages including early proponents such as Roman orator Cicero, the English folk singer Vashti Bunyan as well as different registers of shyness and faux cures for the condition.

Hamja Ahsan is an activist, writer, curator and artist and author. He is a campaigner for prisoners, human rights and civil liberties under the War on Terror, and was shortlisted for the Liberty Human Rights awards for the Free Talha Ahsan campaign. He has presented art projects at Tate Modern, Gwangju Biennale, Shaanakht festival Pakistan and Shlipa Academy, Bangladesh. He co-founded DIY Cultures Festival in 2013 and has collaborated on the documentary entitled Liverpool & Hillsborough Solidarity Zine Collection (1981-2017).

Joe Moran is professor of English and cultural history at Liverpool John Moores University and Guardian columnist. He is the author of Armchair Nation: An Intimate History of Britain in Front of the Television and Shrinking Violets  (2016, Profile).
