NHS Philosophy Residency Launch

  • Thu, 29 Nov 2018
  • 5.00 PM

Join us at the launch of a new residency! Dr Yiota Vassilopoulou is embarking on anambitious year-long residency with NHS R&D-North West and we are delighted that she is launching it at Bluecoat where she was our Philosopher-in-Residence, 2013-15. Along with colleagues Dr Rachael Wiseman and Professor Michael Hauskeller, she will be helping the NHS to think deeply about some of the most important questions of our time: is there ever a right time to die, what does good health mean, and how should the NHS allocate scarce resources and manage competing demands on its services? As at Bluecoat, art, creativity and imagination will be at the heart of their work.

The academic-in-residence model was introduced through a partnership between Bluecoat and University of Liverpool’s Department of Philosophy in 2013. Since its inception, academics have been in residence at Bluecoat, Open Eye Gallery and Bury Museum. This new residency takes the model outside of the cultural sector for the first time.

Professor Dame Janet Beer, Vice Chancellor of University of Liverpool, said: “Every one of us has a stake in these issues and we hope through this project to help to prepare the NHS for the future.”

Professor Stuart Eglin, CEO of NHS R&D NW, says: “I am delighted to host this residency with my team and hope that this is the beginning of a new way of thinking about the future of health and care research.”

The evening will include talks, a live musical performance from cellist Georgina Aasgaard and a drinks reception where you will be able to get to know the residency team and find out more about this exciting venture.

Free, booking required
