Nils Norman: Words on the Bluecoat’s College Lane elevation

  • Fri, 24 Jan 2014 - Fri, 23 Jan 2015
  • 10.00 AM - 6.00 PM
  • Tickets: Free

Visitors arriving from College Lane will have noticed brightly coloured words painted onto the exterior walls and passageway of the Bluecoat. They are a public art commission by artist Nils Norman that responds to the changing environment of this once overlooked part of the city centre, now transformed by the Liverpool ONE development.

As the area continues to grow and develop, the Bluecoat - with its arts programme, working studios, historic building, retail and catering offer - provides a unique mix. In dialogue with our staff, Norman drew from the building’s life, its history and location to create a cohesive visual approach, similar to a brand but more like a language. Bringing the Bluecoat out on to street, this focuses on and attempts to convey a real sense of place, rather than a product. The words are not ‘advertising’ anything, but suggest possibilities. They reflect the Bluecoat’s creative activity: some, such as Craft and Potter, are explicit, others more ambiguous.

A ‘Golden Opportunity’ commission, funded under Liverpool Arts Regeneration Consortium (LARC)’s Thrive programme. The Bluecoat is grateful to Liverpool City Council for permission to carry out this temporary art installation on our historic building. Thanks to sign painter Ken Bullock and Liverpool One for in kind support.
