RADWWRemoved And Destroyed Without Warning (RADWW) is a monumental 3D drawing of a submarine. Created by Mark Anstee from wood, cloth, paper and metallic wax, it is a site-specific installation measuring approximately 12 metres from bow to stern. Using the full height of the Bluecoat’s Vide space, this archetypal submarine is positioned diagonally ‘nose-up’ as if trying to surface for air.

RADWW is built using techniques employed in the construction of boats, planes and traditional stretchers for painting.

It references World War II military decoys as well as drawings of mediaeval war machines. The outer skin or armour of the submarine is composed of approximately 2,000 paper panels, each individually frottaged by the artist, a technique associated with brass-rubbing but also used by the Surrealist movement as a form of automatic drawing.
