In Conversation with Bluecoat Gardener in Residence Andrea Ku

  • Fri, 07 May 2021
  • 12.00 PM - 1.00 PM

Join us for a live online lunchtime in conversation with Andrea Ku, Bluecoat's Gardener in Residence.

Andrea Ku is a Liverpool 8-based artist, gardener and beekeeper. She first trained in Fine Art at Manchester Metropolitan University, and then in Landscape Architecture at Leeds Metropolitan University. She was encouraged while working as a gardener to take up beekeeping which proved to be a life changing experience. Now overseeing 35 hives in the Merseyside region, she nurtures thousands of bees in city centre settings, churchyards and botanical gardens.

She'll join us to discuss her vast experience as a beekeeper, the decline in the bee population and what we can do about it, the diversity of Liverpool's green spaces and how you can encourage nature to thrive whether in a garden, window sill, park or informal green space. She'll also be sharing some tips for bee-friendly planting and how to get your garden ready this spring. If you have any specific questions, please send them in advance to, you can also ask them during the event via the live Q&A box.

The event will be hosted by Bluecoat's Head of Programme Marie-Anne McQuay

More about Andrea Ku

Andrea Ku started as our Gardener in Residence autumn 2020, thanks to funding from Liverpool City Council’s Without Walls programme. She is one of a number of public-facing specialists hosted by Bluecoat in recent years which aim to share knowledge in the most accessible way possible to the widest public possible. This has included Philosopher in Residence Dr Panayiota Vassilopoulou (2013-2015) and Sociologist in Residence Dr Paul Jones (2017). These residencies have run alongside our longstanding Artist in Residence programme, with artists sharing work in our galleries and for family weekends.
