Brigitte Jurack, Rostrums for the 21st Century

2011

This installation in Democratic Promenade evoked Liverpool’s ‘lost’ speakers’ platform, an important site for demonstrations and rallies originally located at the Pier Head. Designed by sculptor Arthur. Dooley and architect Jim Hunter, it was erected in 1973. Jurack’s installation, made in collaboration with 18 artists, included a collection of models representing proposals for new spaces for public protest, inviting us to think what form a contemporary platform for collective dissent might take.
