Latin inscription on the front of the building

1717

The school was an Anglican Church school and this inscription declares its mission: 'CHRISTIANAE CHARITATI PROMOVENDAE INOPIQUE PUERITIAE ECCLESIAE ANGLICANAE PRINCIPIIS IMBUENDAE SACRUM. ANNO SALUTIS MDCCXVII,' which translates as: ‘Dedicated to the promotion of Christian charity and the training of poor boys in the principles of the Anglican church. Founded in the year of salvation 1717.’ The inscription has been restored several times over the years. When Lord Leverhulme purchased the building he renamed it 'Liberty Buildings' and covered over the Latin, which was replaced in the 1910s with the new name and that of the School of Architecture which was based in the building at that time.
