Lowry Lounge 2024 Altar Images
2024
With the 2024 Lounge falling on the Mexican Day of the Dead, the setting for Under the Volcano, the event was themed around this day and included a participatory altar dedicated to Lowry. Attendees were invited to contribute an offering by bringing things on the day: flowers, messages, food, photos, etc. Those unable to make the event sent objects and postcards to be added.
John Hyatt’s beautiful, printed fabrics, created for his installation at the 2017 Lounge, were incorporated into the altar. The Bluecoat kitchen provided soul cake, baked from a traditional recipe (dating from mediaeval times when soul cakes were given on All Hallows' Eve [Halloween], All Saints' Day, or All Souls' Day, to help the souls of the dead). The Bluecoat’s inclusive arts group for learning-disabled adults, Blue Room, contributed small sculptures. Traditional Day of the Dead material arrived from Mexico. Mescal bottles and other ephemera from previous Lounges were added alongside photos of two departed Lounge souls, John Hyatt and Vik Doyen.
Thanks to Cathy Cole and Helen Tookey for the images.
