The 2017 Lowry Lounge: Shot Under the Volcano

2017

Shot Under the Volcano, an installation by artist John Hyatt and design and innovation company Uniform, was shown in the Bluecoat bistro for the 2017 Lounge. Inspired by the shrine of the 'Virgin for those who have nobody with' in Under the Volcano and with a uniformed 'official' on hand to authorise participation, the altar installation invited the audience to individually choose a shot from two bottles of clear liquid – one water, the other alcoholic. Sensors detected the preference, and design wizardry calculated the individual's fortune by delivering a section of Lowry's novel chosen at random from a bank of digital sound clips narrated and recorded by Hyatt, who said of the work, 'like the book, this installation confronts opposites and tries to reconcile dualities'.
