Hear Us O Lord From Heaven Thy Dwelling Place

2022

A network of artists, musicians, poets and students has been meeting at sea between Liverpool and the Isle of Man to consider some short stories of Wirral-born writer Malcolm Lowry (1909-57) in relation to care for our oceans. In his short story collection Hear Us O Lord From Heaven Thy Dwelling Place, titled after a Manx fishermen’s hymn, Lowry explored the threat of industry to our environment and used the Isle of Man, which he visited as a child, as a symbol of hope and natural beauty.

The network has been talking with members of the public on the ferry, wild swimmers, local bands, beach cleaners and representatives from the Isle of Man Government, gathering material subsequently collaged into abstract podcasts that include fragments of conversations, Lowry texts and underwater recordings (85% of the Isle of Man's territory is marine). This is a collaboration between Leeds Beckett University, Liverpool John Moores University and the Bluecoat and was supported by the Arts and Humanities Research Council.
