Yuan Gong returns to Bluecoat with a special exhibition of his film, Hamletmachine, an ambitious work developed over a number of years and crossing between performance art, film, theatre, and visual art. Yuan Gong’s work adapts the classic postmodern play of the same name by German director Heiner Müller, written 40 years ago in East Germany. Müller’s work took an experimental approach to theatre, with actors breaking character and speaking to the audience about acting. Using modern technology, Yuan Gong’s film takes these experiments further; in one instance an aerial drone, usually used to film from high angles and invisible to the viewer, takes up a position within the frame and seems to claim a role as a non-human actor.

Yuan Gong is an artist based in China. He is known for working not only across the disciplines of film, sculpture, installation and performance but also for his work supporting young Chinese artists; in 2006 he launched the New Power China Biennial. Yuan Gong has exhibited in major solo exhibitions in China and Europe at galleries such as Ming Contemporary Art Museum, Shanghai (2016) and Museum Tinguely, Basel (2015). His work has been included in international biennials such as Venice Bienniale (2011 and 2013) and The Asia Triennial Manchester (2014). In September 2016 the artist worked with Effy Hong (China), Philip Courtenay (UK) and Yellow House (UK) on live performances, rehearsals and filming of parts of Hamletmachine at Bluecoat.
