Blue Room exhibition at the Bluecoat

26 July – 4 September, 10am – 6pm every day

Blue Room has been an integral part of the Bluecoat community since we reopened in 2008. Every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, a membership of over 30 learning disabled adults from across the city come to the Bluecoat to make art. They use the exhibitions in our gallery as a starting point for creating their own pieces of work, with creative support from a team of artists

This is the first major exhibition of their work at the Bluecoat and includes examples of their creative output from the past 12 months.

Blue Room was established during the redevelopment of the Bluecoat through a partnership with Liverpool City Council whose staff support the members’ participation. Its overall aim is to make high quality contemporary visual arts experiences accessible to learning disabled people. Importantly, Blue Room offers an integrated approach where members are part of a wider creative community here at the Bluecoat. Whilst this sense of community is important, the members are encouraged to think and act independently through their identity as artists.

The exhibition features collective pieces and those created by individuals covering a variety of media. The exhibition aims to be reflective of the different experiences Blue Room members have had through their involvement in the programme.

More recently Blue Room members have started to get involved in volunteering at the Bluecoat, in the cafe, in the offices, on our family programme and around the building. During the summer, Blue Room members will be running art activities for families every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoon from 1 – 3pm in the hub at the Bluecoat.
