Bed-In at the Bluecoat: Chuck Perkins

Dressed in the appropriate bed time attire vest, boxers, hat, Chuck Perkins the poet from New Orleans takes to the bed. He soon begins to welcome the groups of curious bystanders, sharing his love of lost jazz pioneers and the works of Tom Robbins and many Mardi Gras trinkets. Answering questions, which range from the fate of his hometown after Katrina to the buyout of Liverpool FC with a relaxed air.

Then the whole thing shifts up a gear as he is joined by sax and bass where this spirit of sharing and openness shows through his poetry, honest, full of the rhythms of his background. Swinging from the personal to the political they all came from, what the kids say; from the top of his dome the words come untethered and loose from ink, to settle on the blank page of our minds.

With his Bed-In this ‘freak of the alchemist’ performed his own alchemy and turned the air in the Hub of the Bluecoat electric.
