Weekly Blog 2: Green Spaces

Welcome to the second weekly blog!

While we're all spending more time at home we're aiming to bring you a range of articles, films, family activities and more that we hope will be useful, uplifting or simply offer a moment away from the headlines. Be the first to receive this news by signing up to our enewsletter.

This week we're focusing on the theme of green spaces, as many of us find ourselves with a new appreciation for nature and our parks and gardens. We want to know what you think so please do get in touch on our social media or email us at and let us know if we're getting it right.

Frances Disley and Andrea Ku - Green Spaces

Frances Disley, Pattern Buffer, Bluecoat exhibition view, 2020.

On Thursday 12 March Frances Disley opened her solo exhibition Pattern Buffer at Bluecoat. Although the exhibition is temporarily closed, we still want our visitors to be able to enjoy the show online, until you are able to visit again in person.

This week Andrea Ku, managing director of Collective B4 Diversity, explains the principles of permaculture which influence Disley’s use of plants within Pattern Buffer.

Read our latest blog for Andrea's guide to permaculture

Bluecoat Garden

We might be biased, but we think our garden is quite special. As well as being a beautiful green space it has had many uses over the last 300 years or so, from herb garden to school playground. More recently it has hosted performances, workshops and outdoor sculpture exhibitions, as well as being a calming place where our visitors come to relax.

If, like us, you're missing that tranquil space at the moment, visit our My Bluecoat website and discover a host of images documenting how it has changed over the years.

Green Fingers Playlist

Looking for some new listening material? Taking a Green Fingers theme, our Artistic Director Bryan Biggs has compiled this playlist inspired by gardens, planting and growing.

Are there any other records you think should be included? Drop us a line on Twitter or Facebook and let us know!
